Well for starters it's a type of retention that y'all can't actually write to! Only Manufactures bring written but about type of data to the ROM chips!
Not besides long agone y'all could solely update it past times physicly replacing it together with purchase a novel one! But on today's applied scientific discipline y'all could actually update it from the manufacturer's updating site, like inward a familiar agency equally if y'all are updating drivers for your audio card,video carte du jour together with etc...
That's why it's no longer called ROM chips but an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) or but EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)!
One of the major firmwares used on ROM, EEPROM is called BIOS(Basic Input /Output System) that includes a Power On Self Test (POST) business together with other tasks that deal the loading of the currently installed Operating System (XP,VISTA,Win7 together with etc...)!
POST makes conection possible betwixt devices together with the operating system.
